upon these slender shoulders,
did i hear the night bird play
“tip-tap-tap
click-click-click,”
drowning out the sound of rain
on the terracotta rooftops
of middle class suburbia

“tip-tap-tap”
she goes,
“click-click-click”
she goes,
flitting from branch to branch
and through dingy yellow light-beams
from long-forgotten lampposts

did i hear the night bird playing
at the edge of darkened puddles
as black diamonds fell from the stars?
did i hear her go “tip-tap-tap,”
“click-click-click”
in that icy black?
